Destinations to Visit on This Walking Tour

This evening walking tour—or cycling, if you prefer—starting from the Ancient Hue area offers a serene journey through the lush and tranquil Phu Mong neighborhood, a historically significant area once chosen as a private residence by many generations of Nguyen Lords dating back to the 17th century. The neighborhood’s leafy lanes, traditional houses, and quiet courtyards provide a sense of stepping back in time, allowing participants to experience the charm and atmosphere of old Hue away from the busy tourist spots.

First Stop – Spring Blossom Temple

Your first stop is the Spring Blossom Temple, a site that was once the private residence, or Phủ, of Pham Huu Dien, a high-ranking mandarin (Thượng thư) of the Ministry of Rites (Bộ lễ). The temple today retains traces of its original architecture, serene garden spaces, and elegant courtyards, giving visitors an insight into the lifestyle of Vietnam’s scholarly elite during the Nguyen Dynasty. Walking through this space, you can appreciate the harmony of traditional design and natural surroundings that reflects both spiritual and cultural significance.

Second Stop – Ngoc Hung Conical Hat Artisan

Next, you will visit the Ngoc Hung Conical Hat Artisan, a master dedicated to preserving the nearly lost art of crafting the so-called “transparent” conical hats. Each hat is meticulously handmade, from selecting the bamboo frame to weaving the delicate layers of palm leaves, requiring patience, precision, and a deep understanding of traditional techniques. Although thousands of admirers and collectors place orders for his hats, his maximum monthly output remains just 40 pieces, making each hat a unique symbol of cultural craftsmanship. This stop offers not only a glimpse into traditional artisan skills but also a chance to witness how heritage survives through dedicated hands.

Third Stop – O Le Rice Dumpling

The tour concludes at O Le Rice Dumpling, a hidden gem tucked behind what appears to be a simple garden. This family-run establishment preserves a recipe passed down from ancestors who once served in the Nguyen Dynasty court. While not widely advertised or overly popular, it is a beloved spot among local Hue natives returning home and offers an authentic taste of traditional flavors that have endured through centuries. Tasting these dumplings here allows participants to connect directly with the culinary heritage of the region in an intimate, family-oriented setting.

How Long Does This Walking Tour Typically Last?

The walking tour is designed as a relaxed 2.5-hour afternoon journey, focusing on comfort and leisure while still capturing the unique, authentic experiences of Hue. The pace allows participants to stroll through quiet lanes, pause to admire architectural details, interact with artisans, and savor local delicacies without feeling rushed. Along the way, the tour provides ample opportunities for photography, quiet reflection, and an appreciation of the rhythm of local life, making it more than just a sightseeing activity—it is a cultural immersion that engages all the senses and leaves lasting memories.
