Bach Ma National Park

An Element of our Design

Early morning departure from Hue for a scenic 2-hour drive southward to Bach Ma National Park, one of Vietnam’s most biodiverse reserves, home to many rare and endangered species listed in Vietnam’s Red List of Threatened Species, such as the Saola (Truong Son Mountain Goat-antelope), Red-shanked Douc Langur, White-crested Pheasant, and Ferret-badger. Covering more than 22,000 hectares (85 sq mi) of lush mountains, misty peaks, and dense evergreen forests, the park offers an exceptional blend of tropical and subtropical ecosystems. As you leave the lowlands behind, watch the scenery shift dramatically—from the humid tropical monsoon forest at the base to the cooler sub-tropical forest above 900 meters (2,953 ft).

During the French colonial era, Bach Ma moutain was cherished as a summer retreat for French administrators who sought to escape the heat of the plains. Remnants of their villas still stand hidden among the clouds, adding a touch of nostalgia to the wild landscape.

Upon arrival, you’ll meet a local forest expert and naturalist, whose deep knowledge and passion for Bach Ma’s flora and fauna will enrich your experience. Embark on a three-hour, eight-kilometer (five-mile) hike through the sub-tropical forest, surrounded by the music of cicadas and the scent of wild orchids. The trail leads you to Ngu Ho Lake, a chain of five emerald pools connected by small waterfalls, perfect for a moment of rest and reflection beneath a canopy of ancient trees. Continue onward to Do Quyen Waterfall, a breathtaking cascade named after the rhododendron flowers that bloom vibrantly along its banks each spring.

Pause for a picnic lunch amid the serene mountain air before ascending to the summit of Bach Ma Peak, rising 1,450 meters (4,757 ft) above sea level. From this vantage point, the panorama is nothing short of spectacular—stretching from the shimmering Tam Giang Lagoon system to the pristine arc of Lang Co Beach and the distant blue of the East Sea.

In the afternoon, continue your gentle trek through sub-tropical evergreen trails, where you may spot rare bird species, butterflies, and exotic orchids. Visit the Orchid Collection House, home to a remarkable display of native species found throughout the park. As the day draws to a close, descend the mountain path and return to your awaiting vehicle for the drive back to Hue.
