Artisan Tôn Nữ Thị Hà — The Living Flame of Hue’s Imperial Culinary Heritage and the one behind Hue’s one-of-a-kind cultural garden

Born into the royal lineage of the Nguyễn Dynasty, Artisan Tôn Nữ Thị Hà carries a name that itself evokes noble descent — “Tôn Nữ” for women and “Tôn Thất” for men of the royal family.

At the tender age of ten, she was guided into the royal kitchen by her aunts — the wives of high-ranking mandarins — to observe and learn the art of preparing exquisite dishes once served to Emperor Bảo Đại. Those early experiences within the royal household shaped her deep understanding of refinement, balance, and the philosophy behind imperial cuisine. By the age of twenty-three, she had already mastered the art enough to orchestrate an entire royal banquet on her own — a remarkable achievement that reflected both mastery and cultural grace.

Often regarded as the last living flame of the Nguyễn royal culinary tradition, she continues to share her artistry with the world, having been invited by universities and cultural institutions in France, Iraq, and Spain to conduct workshops and cultural exchanges.

A true daughter of Hue, Madam Hà also nurtures a passion for collecting chili varieties from every destination she visits. Her Tịnh Gia Viên Garden now houses an extraordinary collection of rare and exotic chilies from across the globe — a living testament to her boundless curiosity and devotion to flavor.

Among the treasures of her garden stand century-old apricot blossom trees (Ochna integerrima), including four that are more than one hundred years old — a rare heritage in Vietnamese culture. In Vietnam, the apricot blossom symbolizes prosperity, longevity, and noble virtue. Thus, Tịnh Gia Viên is not merely a garden or a restaurant, but a living sanctuary of culinary artistry and royal spirit, where the elegance of Hue’s past continues to bloom with timeless grace.
